Trucking detention time has always plagued the industry, but the ELD mandate has brought greater awareness of the issue since it’s made it easier for carriers to visualize just how much time is wasted. In 2018, truckers waited at shipping docks an average of 2.5 hours per job, but sometimes up to 5.5 hours. According to a survey, only 3% of truckers receive detention pay for at least 90% of their claims to the shippers, costing truckers billions in wages. These lost wages are a big contributor to driver turnover. With the driver shortage already reaching dangerous levels, industry leaders can’t afford to ignore the inefficiency and aggravation long detention times cause.
