Brake problems are disturbingly common. According to the FMCSA’s Large Truck Crash Causation Study, 32.7% of large trucks with pre-crash violations had brake problems. That’s why the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) holds safety events - Brake Safety Day and Brake Safety Weeks - to promote brake safety and call attention to the dangers of faulty systems.

Since 2016, enforcement personnel have inspected over 98,700 vehicles in both the United States and Canada, pulling over 13,600 off the road for brake violations. While the number has varied, the CVSA pulls an average of 14% of vehicles off the road during the inspection blitz. During the September 2018 Brake Safety Week, safety personnel inspected the largest number of 35,080 commercial motor vehicles, pulling 4,955 vehicles out of service.

According to the data, the percentage of vehicles being put out-of-service has increased for every CVSA event since May 2017. Keeping track of preventative maintenance and brake repairs across a large fleet can be a challenge, but it’s important they take proactive action to ensure vehicle health and driver safety. Fleet management software can help carriers implement an automated, organized process to stay ahead of brake health, especially ahead of the CVSA’s next Brake Safety Week in September 2019.
